The Centre for Anthropological and Ethnosociological Studies (CAESS), attached to the University of Plovdiv „Paisij Hilendarski", was created at the beginning of the year 2003. Its main goals are to increase the interest in the new developments in research among the teaching staff and students (PhD student inclusive) of the Department of Ethnology and Sociology and to stimulate and support their own research activities by providing resources of different kind and a forum for exchange of ideas and discussion.

The founders share the conviction that anthropologically informed research is an essential element for understanding the past and current problems of the Balkans. That is why the Centre wants to support the development of anthropology in Bulgaria and to facilitate communication between Bulgarian and foreign scholars working in the fields of humanities and social sciences.
